David Jean asks:

I am a hard-gainer skinny guy who has done everything but failed to gain the muscle mass I need. I recently heard that hypertrophy training is the best for skinny people, is that true? If yes, what is the best way to follow a hypertrophy plan?

Our Expert’s Answer:

Yes, hypertrophy is one of the best training techniques for skinny men and women. There are huge chances that it will work for you and help you gain the size you have been desiring all along. Hypertrophy-Specific Training (HST) is a proven method for packing up on muscle mass and in a short period of time. Not only this but this technique is also extremely effective for losing body fat.

This strength training method will put your muscles under extreme amount of tension and thus you will eventually gain quality lean muscle mass. Hypertrophy training involves compound movements including;

  • Squats
  • Bench Press
  • Deadlift
  • Pull-Up
  • Clean and Press

To start this program, train three days a week with lighter weight. Include at least three exercises for upper body and three for lower body. Workout in alternate days and get active-rest in the off days. Set repetitions shall be between 8 – 12 and rest period should be around 60 – 90 seconds.

However, be aware that nutrition is the key and hypertrophy training won’t work for you if you don’t follow the right diet. If the diet won’t be on-point, you will only lose strength and there is no way you would gain any muscle mass. Follow PlanetGainz’ FREE Muscle Building Diet Plan to have the perfect nutrition plan for hypertrophy training.

Supplementation is extremely important when you are trying to gain muscle fat as a skinny guy or girl. Utilize a good pre-work (Recommended: Cellucor C4 pre-workout) and post workout protein shake or weight gainer (Recommended: Serious Mass) for maximum results.

Good luck!
